Sun is Life Features & Articles

Contributing to the Industry Through Education

Education has always been at the heart of everything I do. Whether I'm speaking at conferences, consulting with businesses, or working directly with clients, my goal has always been to help make light therapy and wellness easier to understand through science, practical application, and real world experience.

In October 2024, I was invited to write my first freelance article for Sun is Life magazine, focusing on the science and applications of red light therapy. What began as a single feature quickly grew into an ongoing partnership, with regular contributions covering photobiomodulation, tanning, wellness technology, salon operations, and emerging industry trends.

Less than a year later, I was honored to be promoted to Senior Staff Writer, taking on a larger role in helping shape the magazine's educational content, editorial direction, and overall flow. Today, I continue contributing articles designed to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical implementation, helping salon owners, wellness professionals, and industry leaders better understand the rapidly evolving world of light based wellness.

Below you'll find a collection of my published articles for Sun is Life magazine, each reflecting my passion for education, evidence based information, and advancing the wellness industry through knowledge.

Joule Heist
Published in November 2024. In it, I break down one of the most misunderstood concepts in red light therapy: joules. While many people focus on wavelength or treatment time, it's the delivered energy dose that truly determines whether a session is likely to produce meaningful results. This article explains how to calculate joules, why dosing matters, and how understanding this simple measurement can help both professionals and consumers make smarter decisions about light therapy.

Do Skincare Products Help or Hinder Light Therapy?

Explores an often overlooked aspect of photobiomodulation: how the products applied to the skin can influence the amount of red light that actually reaches the tissue. Drawing from scientific research and personal testing, I examine whether common skincare products block, absorb, or even enhance light penetration. The article also highlights ingredients specifically designed to work alongside red light therapy, helping salons and consumers choose products that may maximize treatment effectiveness and improve overall skin health.

Illuminating focuses on how light based technologies are transforming the tanning and wellness industry through science, education, and responsible application. Rather than simply highlighting equipment, the article explains the biological principles behind photobiomodulation and why understanding light dosage, wavelengths, and treatment protocols is essential for achieving consistent results. It encourages salon owners to move beyond marketing claims, embrace evidence based practices, and educate clients on what light therapy can realistically accomplish. Ultimately, the article emphasizes that success with light therapy comes from combining quality equipment with proper training, accurate dosing, and a commitment to delivering treatments backed by science rather than hype.

The Science of Light: Why It's the Next Big Thing in Wellness introduces readers to the growing role of light therapy as a cornerstone of modern wellness. The article explains the science of photobiomodulation, how specific wavelengths of light interact with our cells to support skin health, reduce inflammation, promote recovery, and enhance overall well-being. It also explores why more spas and salons are expanding beyond traditional services to incorporate light therapy as clients seek natural, non-invasive wellness options.

Beyond the science, the article discusses the business opportunity for salon owners, emphasizing the importance of investing in quality equipment, educating staff, understanding FDA-compliant claims, and creating treatment packages that deliver real value. Ultimately, it highlights why light therapy is becoming one of the fastest-growing trends in the wellness industry, benefiting both clients looking for effective, drug-free solutions and businesses seeking to diversify and grow.

Shining a Light: My Experience at the Heartland Tanning VIBE Expo is a personal reflection on my experience speaking at the 2025 Heartland Tanning VIBE Expo in Kansas City. The article shares how presenting on photobiomodulation alongside other industry leaders reinforced the growing interest in light therapy while also highlighting the need for better education and standardized training within the industry. I discuss the value of networking with salon owners, exchanging ideas, and helping professionals better understand the science behind red light therapy so they can confidently educate their clients. The article concludes with a commitment to continuing education and collaboration, emphasizing that by sharing knowledge and supporting one another, the tanning and wellness industry can continue to grow responsibly and successfully.

Radiantly Red Light explores the science behind photobiomodulation and explains why red light therapy has become one of the fastest-growing wellness services in the tanning industry. The article breaks down how red and near-infrared light stimulate cellular energy production by supporting mitochondrial function, helping promote skin rejuvenation, reduce inflammation, ease discomfort, and support the body's natural healing processes.

It also emphasizes the importance of proper dosing, explaining why more light is not always better and how understanding joules helps create safe, effective treatment protocols. By combining the science with practical guidance, the article gives salon owners the knowledge they need to educate clients, deliver better results, and confidently integrate red light therapy into their wellness offerings.

Red Light Misconceptions separates fact from fiction by addressing some of the most common myths surrounding red light therapy. The article explains why proper dosing, measured in joules, is far more important than treatment time alone, why more powerful devices are not always better, and why hybrid tanning units should not be marketed as medical-grade red light therapy devices. It also clarifies what red light therapy can realistically achieve, emphasizing science-backed education, responsible marketing, and setting accurate client expectations. The goal is to help salon owners confidently educate clients while building trust through evidence-based information rather than exaggerated claims.

The article encourages education over hype, showing how evidence-based practices create better client outcomes and long-term industry credibility.

The article explains the science behind biphasic dosing, why excessive red light exposure can reduce effectiveness, and how overuse may contribute to cellular fatigue or temporary detox responses in some individuals. It also discusses contraindications, regulatory considerations, and the importance of informed consent, proper client screening, and evidence-based treatment protocols. Tricks & Illusions
The Wand Doesn't Work Without the Spell challenges the flashy marketing and exaggerated claims that often surround red light therapy devices. The article explains why a device's appearance, LED count, or advertised wattage means very little without understanding the measurements that truly matter, including irradiance, joules, wavelength, and treatment time. It encourages salon owners to look beyond buzzwords, ask better questions, and rely on verified science rather than marketing gimmicks when selecting equipment. Ultimately, the article reminds readers that successful photobiomodulation comes from education, proper dosing, and evidence-based technology, not smoke and mirrors.

Luxury Spa Therapy Without the Price Tag redefines what modern tanning salons can offer by comparing today's wellness-focused salons to high-end luxury spas. The article highlights how services like red light therapy, infrared saunas, skincare, massage, hydration treatments, and UV tanning can provide many of the same wellness benefits found at exclusive spas, but in a more accessible and affordable way. It emphasizes that lasting results come from consistency rather than occasional luxury treatments, encouraging salon owners to embrace education, evidence-based services, and routine wellness experiences. Ultimately, the article positions today's sun and wellness salons as destinations that deliver real value by making premium wellness available to more people, more often.
